MLB Alum John Thompson Held on $250,000 Bond after Online Solicitation of a Minor

A Florida sting operation targeting individuals seeking inappropriate relationships with minors led to the apprehension of a previous professional baseball player.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 28-year-old pitcher, John Thompson, on May 15, as part of their ongoing investigation. Thompson, who briefly played for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2019, was identified amongst 27 other individuals taken into custody during the operation.

Thompson reportedly engaged in online communications with an undercover agent posing as a 16-year-old boy since April 25. According to authorities, Thompson expressed intentions of meeting the minor for sexual activities despite being made aware of their age. He was arrested upon arrival at the prearranged location.

A footage from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office revealed that Thompson resisted arrest and refused to comply until a K-9 was involved in subduing him. He currently faces four felony charges, including attempting to commit unlawful sex acts with a minor and use of a computer to solicit a child. Thompson’s bond has been set at $250,000.

His defense attorney, Sarah Johnson, informed the Associated Press that Thompson plans to plead not guilty and intends to fight these allegations.

Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2014, Thompson spent several years playing in the minor leagues before making his major league debut. Injuries forced him out of the MLB scene after a brief tenure in 2019 and he was subsequently released by the team.
